Clear Aligners (Invisalign)
Clear aligners are an alternative to conventional braces and are intended to guide teeth into the correct place. Clear aligners use a progressive force to regulate tooth movement, similar to braces, but without metal wires. The aligners are constructed of durable plastic and are custom-built for each individual’s mouth.
Now, patients have an alternative to unsightly metal braces. Invisalign entails wearing a set of custom-made, transparent plastic aligners that move teeth into the correct position. Patients who previously would not have considered braces are now considering Invisalign.
How do Clear Aligners work?
Each patient’s aligner tray is constructed of BPA-free plastic and is custom-made. Each tray advances the teeth in discrete amounts.
Every two to three weeks, aligner trays are frequently replaced until the teeth are straight and aligned. The number of trays required depends on the degree of misalignment (also called malocclusion).
What Dental problems Can Clear Aligners Correct?
Depending on the brand, transparent aligners may correct the following concerns with tooth alignment:
- Crowded enamel (overlapping teeth)
- Overbites (for example upper front teeth contact with the lower front teeth)
- Underbites (For example bottom front teeth contact with the upper front teeth)
- Diastema (little or huge gaps between the teeth)
- Open bites (when front upper and lower teeth slant outward and don't touch when the mouth is close; a very rare condition)
- Misaligned infant (primary) teeth
- Some aligners have no contact with the gums. They are contoured to sit comfortably along the gum line in a scalloped manner. This design makes the trays less obtrusive and more "invisible."
Are Clear Aligners appropriate for all patients?
In some circumstances, transparent aligners are not as effective as traditional braces, thus they have certain restrictions. After a clinical examination, we talk with you if aligners may help your condition. The good news is that compared to ten years ago, Invisalign can now correct more issues. The mechanism for gaining room to straighten uneven teeth is a key distinction between aligners and conventional braces. With traditional braces, teeth may be extracted, but with Invisalign, they can only be pushed. With traditional braces, it is simpler to extend a narrow arch, derotate posterior teeth, and extrude teeth.
If you have a crowded dental arch, some interdental stripping (tooth shaving) may be required with clear aligners.
How do Clear Aligners function?
The therapy using clear aligners contains the following steps:
- Consultation or home evaluation - Consultation with an orthodontist is the first step. A dentist will inspect your teeth and take a digital image of your mouth during the appointment. A customized treatment plan is then developed. You will obtain a digital preview of your new smile before to the creation of your aligners. Some aligner manufacturers enable you to mail in impressions of your teeth using "goopy putty" instead of seeing an orthodontist or physician for a consultation.
- Preparation of Aligner - After taking an imprint of your teeth, a 3D treatment plan will be developed for you. Once approved, the digital models are sent to a manufacturing plant where aligners are manufactured. You will now accept therapy and begin the procedure. Note: If you ordered an impression kit but are not eligible, you may request a refund. However, the aligners are non-refundable once the treatment plan is accepted.
- Treatment program for aligners - You will replace the trays every one to three weeks. For orthodontic aligners to be successful, they must be worn 20 to 22 hours each day. A single aligner can move teeth no more than 1 mm, hence numerous aligners will be required. Treatment might last between 3 and 24 months.
- Retainers - After treatment is complete, a transparent retainer is fabricated from a model of the patient's freshly aligned teeth. To prevent recurrence of malocclusion, retainers must be worn every night while sleeping. Most aligner manufacturers advise updating them every six to twelve months.
